Stable chromium isotopic variations in peridotite mantle xenoliths: Metasomatism versus partial melting
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chromium isotope compositions have been determined for 42 mantle-derived xenoliths from Cameroon, France, Mongolia, Russia and the USA. The samples are mainly spinel garnet lherzolites, or harzburgites, yield ?53CrNIST979 ?0.33 to 0.43‰, within range of previously reported compositions, ?0.51 0.74‰ (Xia et al., 2017). Partial melting has proposed as a process that alters ?53Cr mantle residue. New non-modal models show compatible nature Cr is inconsistent with large changes in residue’s isotopic composition. fractionation during constrained by calculated ?53Crmantle-melt-values <0.09 measured ?53/52Cr mantle-melt ? 0.07‰, which too small generate observed at low medium degrees melting. متن کاملAncient recycled mantle lithosphere in the Hawaiian plume: Osmium–Hafnium isotopic evidence from peridotite mantle xenoliths
The Emperor Seamount-Hawaiian island chain is thought to originate from melting of a heterogeneous mantle plume, but the composition of the plume has always been inferred from the compositions of the erupted lavas. It has been suggested that recycled (i.e. previously subducted) basaltic oceanic crust (with or without sediments) is part of this plume and responsible for the enriched isotopic com...
متن کاملCompositional variations in a fertile mantle domain: peridotite xenoliths from the Tariat region, Mongolia
Continental lithospheric mantle is heterogeneous in terms of modal and chemical composition. There are fundamental differences between cratonic and younger mantle (Boyd et al., 1997), and non-cratonic mantle has broad compositional variations worldwide (McDonough, 1990). Xenoliths of spinel peridotites in alkali basalts are direct samples of lithospheric mantle but it may not be clear whether a...
متن کاملOceanic slab melting and mantle metasomatism.
Modern plate tectonic brings down oceanic crust along subduction zones where it either dehydrates or melts. Those hydrous fluids or melts migrate into the overlying mantle wedge trigerring its melting which produces arc magmas and thus additional continental crust. Nowadays, melting seems to be restricted to cases of young (< 50 Ma) subducted plates. Slab melts are silicic and strongly sodic (t...

We present the results of melting experiments on a moderately depleted peridotite composition (DMM1) at 10 kbar and 1250±1390 C. Specially designed experiments demonstrate that liquids extracted into aggregates of vitreous carbon spheres maintained chemical contact with the bulk charge down to melt fractions of 0 02±0 04 and approached equilibrium closely. With increasing melt fraction, SiO2, F...
